The Question . . .

The plan was to go away for my birthday (and the 10 year anniversary of our first kiss). We thought of traveling to various locals in Europe or returning to the cabana on the beach in Playa del Carmen, but decided to stay closer to home and hit the Hamptons. Luckily the B&B we first spotted online when planning this trip had a cancelation and we were able to get a room at the Mill House Inn.

The car ride to East Hampton was a lot of fun once we left the parking ticket happy land of Park Slope and the insane Friday driving of Broolkynites eager to be anyplace other than where they currently were. Once we hit East Hampton we both had the same thought -- Chapel Hill. The place really reminded us of Chapel Hill, though with a heavy dash of 5th Ave. in the City. The Inn was indeed right across the street from an old windmill and our room was AWESOME. I was totally psyched about spending the weekend there with Giles.

We had an early dinner reservation, so had to quickly change and head back out. We went to The Laundry and had a very lovely meal -- G indulged his love of pork with a dish of scallops cooked with bacon. I told Giles not to get any dessert because I had a surprise back in the room (I had bought some champagne for us to toast our 10 years together along with some chocolates). I didn't think anything of his surprised expression and questions about surprises I had planned. . . .

Around 9 we returned to the Inn. G opened the door and I noticed rose petals scattered on the floor and roses of all different colors -- orange, yellow, red, pink -- all over the room. The fire was going in the fireplace and a bottle of champagne was chilling. I definitely got tears in my eye, touched that he had gone to such trouble for our anniversary. . . not even thinking that it might be something more.

He popped open the champange, turned on some music (he had a certain David Bowie album already set in the CD player), and suggested I open gifts. I opened his last -- a beautifully wrapped creation in blue and green paper with the most amazing bow ever. Under the paper was a much-used cardboard box which I had to struggle to open and inside I found a whole lot of peanuts. I dug through the peanuts and found a smaller wrapped package. At this point I started wondering. . . but didn't know for certain until I took off the paper and saw that it was a jewerly box, a ring box to be specific. I looked at him and asked "What is this?" He told me to open it and then I saw the ring. He took the box from me, got down on one knee and asked if I would marry him. There was no hesitation in my answer: "Yes. Yes. Yes!Yes!Yes!"

We had a great weekend in East Hampton calling family and friends with the news and enjoying the start of this new phase in our relationship.

There were a few things we wanted to do before heading back to Brooklyn, especially going to the beach and walking along the shore. I also wanted to stop at some of the wineries nearby and the pumpkin patch I had noticed when we were on our way to the Inn. At the pumpkin patch we picked out a great pumpkin (which we later carved into a cat pumpkin). . .then realized that the keys were in the car and the doors were locked. Luckily there was another winery right up the road, so we took the pumpkin with us while waiting for someone to come and jimmy the lock. Giles left to wait for the guy outside, so it was me and the pumpkin at the tasting bar.

This was the most amazing, wonderful, surprising birthday / anniversary weekend ever. It's a lot of fun to now say 'my fiance.'
